A very well-known activity is feeding ducks bread, but actually it could really damage their health.
Many birdwatchers, people interested in nature and kids have sought a local park to feed ducks bread. It’s enjoyable for both the duck and feeder - repetitive quacking making humans laugh or feel boosted with joy, and of course the chance for food making the ducks happy. However, bread is like candy to ducks - it may taste delicious, but the consequences are dire.
Bread, crackers, rolls, chips, fries, donuts, cereal and popcorn give little nutrition to animals like ducks, geese, swans and other waterfowl. Like candy, it’s okay to have in occasional increments, but a diet of pure bread for water birds can result in a shorter lifespan, malnutrition and many other problems.
Ducks need a balanced diet with a large assortment of foods with many vitamins and acids that help them thrive. They obtain these from vegetables, whole grains and berries - not the fluffy, irresistibly soft bread. However, some vegetables are toxic for ducks: there are many on this list, but the main ones are avocados, green potatoes, onions, beans, nuts and iceberg lettuce.
Bread can also be fattening towards ducks, making it harder for them to travel around and evade predators or catch prey.
Additionally, if an easy food source is available, water animals will lay more eggs which will lead to overcrowding. If too many animals inhabit a certain lake, river or pond, it could be harder to get healthy food sources, and could lead to aggression about land.
Disease is also likely to come with excessive carbohydrates - moldy bread may cause aspergillosis, which is a fatal lung infection that can wipe out entire duck groups.
Instead of bread, feed them the following items:
Grapes (cut in half to avoid the risk of choking)
Barley, oats and birdseed
Frozen peas (defrosted, but can be uncooked)
Don’t feed ducks bread and grant them an early death: give them grapes, whole grains and berries to help them thrive in the natural word properly.
